Funny, for so many of us…we have no one “going back to school” but we are in the habit of everything re-starting this time of year. Vacation is over …the summer schedule and loose rules are a thing of the past and we are steering our focus to renewed goals and finishing the year with a bang!

Or it’s possible that you DO have part of the family that have books and backpacks to buy, class schedules to confirm, and new outfits to shop for. In any event we are ‘programmed‘ to begin.

All this “BACK TO SCHOOL” got me thinking as I was revving up my life to renew and re-start my year and plan for the big finish of my 2011 goals. Where are all the places in life that need a recharge?…where do you need renewal? …where do you know that is time to infuse some additional knowledge, energy, vitality, LIFE!??

There are so many ways to begin…first, lets get clear about what it is you actually want. By the time we hit this time of year we are all over the map with the targets we set in January…and that’s if you even remember what they were! Do you? Have you made progress in each area? Is your business on track? After playing all summer, how’s your health and vitality? And have you given a thought to your relationship? What about the big goals you had about your new business/avocation you were going to set out and try? Or what about that course you were going to take? Or, what about the book that you were set to write?

Now, ask yourself, “What do I need to sharpen my skills in?”

“Where do I need to get back to basics?” “Where do I need to do research?” “Where do I need to learn the latest?”

All of us need to apply these questions to each of the critical areas of life. It is time for us to really take a peek and get honest about what we are going to do to finish the year of 2011 with a bang!

Think about what would happen in your relationship if you got back to what really works(basics). What if you learn some new skill and added it to your business? If you did some research on what is new and fresh out there to get involved with that would enhance your life or some area of focus in your life.

I did on Powerful Personalities that was so full of content the response has been overwhelming. I gave details on how to use the knowing the ins and outs of personalities to improve…no not just improve but really get your desired results in every relationship in life.

You want a raise? You want a promotion? You want to be the ONE that is hired out of the 500 applicants? You want that man to pick YOU? You want to find the RIGHT one? And there was much, much more. We covered it all…

We also shared distinctions of how the personalities blend and the up side and downside of each of the personalities…let’s face it…not ALL of our traits are stellar. Do you understand all of your strengths? What are you doing to use them to enrich your relationships?

If you are a born director and just naturally take over when there is a need for leadership…that is great ….we need someone to make a decision and move the team, the group, the family ahead…but if your are just dictating and leading because someone handed you the title and are allowing your bossy,  directives  to  merely shout orders….you will find your team resenting you and undermining your objectives.

Or, your scenario might be something like you are a peacemaker. You are brilliant on getting everyone to agreement, getting them to the negotiating table to have the discussion. The challenge comes when you need to make a decision and pull the trigger to move into action. Can you do it or are you faced with the dilemma of not wanting to be on one side versus the other?

I shared examples on each of the personalities in the area of Leadership, Parenting, Business building, and Finding the Love of your Life!
One thing is for sure, it is so helpful to know who you are at your core and to know what to do to enlarge those strengths and to diminish the limitations.

It occurred to me that most of the focus seemed to be on how all mothers were similar. They have changed diapers, soothed skinned knees, negotiated fights, taught the new math, taxied the ball team and made cupcakes the night before snack day.

What I became aware of this Mother’s Day was how each one has her style of doing it all differently.

I’ve been busy preparing for our Powerful Personality call and in doing so…I noticed how each of the predominant Personality types made their distinct appearance in these women. Each style has its strengths in parenting just as they do in Leadership, Sales, Relationships and Business.

Each and every Mother is spectacular at helping their children find their way into adulthood albeit differently. One is fantastic at cheerleading, supporting and encouraging and assisting their children in finding their creativity. Another is terrific at helping their children plan for college. 4 years in advance they have mapped the way through the AP classes and all the SAT practice courses. Then there is the parent that helps consistently with the art of diplomacy. They help their children to see all sides and to make peace in every setting. And then there is the parent who is busy giving lessons of the details of sorting laundry, following the specifics of a detailed recipe and completing the perfect science project.

Every one of these skills are found in moms (or dads) and others.

These questions were put to me just yesterday by one of my clients, the chairman of his company as we pondered next steps and future growth of the company. Years ago we had set in place a plan where he would step away from the daily management of the company and raise up a CEO to do this.

My response was a resounding YES! It’s possible!

Then the challenge- while the new person is educated with degrees behind his name and years of experience- what occurred , as I’ve seen so many times before when a new ‘personality’ comes in to lead, they do it with Leadership by Title! This has the appearance of a bit of ‘dictatorship’. Do as I say. In this day and age of empowerment and personal development. This style is not very successful.

The team that had been accustomed to being nurtured was now being talked down to and controlled. My first comment was …change is inevitable with every company that is looking to grow. It is particular to a company changing leadership. However, it doesn’t mean that change has to be wrong or bad. (Which some team members are likely to make it) What I focused on was what the CEO’s strengths are. He is detailed, he is process oriented. He will calculate the risks and be gearing to steady long term growth, the true goal of the company.

Then we turned to the limitations, bossy, condescending, perfectionist. These are all  things that can be mitigated. When one becomes conscious to the downside of some of the prevailing traits if becomes clear how to tame them.

We can all change or tone down the traits that will cause friction in our relationships but first you must become aware of who you are and how the qualities affect the other personalities.

If you have the strengths of born leader, goal achieving, excelling in emergencies you might also have the limitations of being bossy, impatient, no tolerance for mistakes, knows everything. OR perhaps you are easy going, relaxed, peaceful, agreeable but also with that, you are not exciting, no goals, resent being pushed too, shy and can’t make decisions.  OR it might look like this, you are talkative, charismatic, creative and full of ideas, but you are also, compulsive, egotistical, too talkative, too loud, want all the credit.

The truth is that every personality makes a fantastic leader. Nations have had leaders with every personality type. The successful leaders have accentuated their strengths and mitigated their limitations.

If you’re the leader, decide what environment will cause your team to thrive. Whether it’s ‘nurturing’, ‘competitive’, ‘creative’, ‘efficient’ or ‘collaborative’. Place the focus on that and utilize the strengths you have that lend to that end.
